2011. Food coloring and bleach on 6" x 12" canvas

Now this was a cool assignment. On the first day of our painting class we were to come up with a challenge for a painting that would be due the next week. Everyone chimed in with their ideas and we eventually agreed that the paintings would have to be something involving nature. The teacher then said "Alright, but it has to be transparent and your pieces must not be painted with a traditional painting medium. No paint allowed." That was a fun twist.

When the assignment was due it was fun to see all the ideas of everybody and what they used to paint with. Most of them ransacked their refrigerator and cupboards and painted with various types of sauces and fruit juice. Their paintings apparently started smelling weird after a couple days and had to be thrown out. 3; The majority or the class shared the idea of jellyfish as their transparent thing in nature, but I was the only one who used food coloring and bleach as my medium and it's held very well (and doesn't smell weird). xD A word of caution though... If you ever want to paint something with food coloring, take heed that if it's not watered down some, it will not dry. The darkest parts of my painting are food coloring that has not been diluted any and it still comes off on my fingers to this day. Granted, it's only when I'm pressing hard enough, so it's very safe for the most part, but just know that it took an entire year of hanging on a wall to get that dry. :meow:

WHOA. I didn't know that was possible! Food coloring and bleach?! THAT'S BOMB-DIGGETY AWESOME. This is so pretty, and I love how the jellyfish look luminescent as they should. The texture and lighting and the smoothness of the jellyfish are amazing.

That assignment sounds really fun! Very creative. :) You should try some fixatif--it might help set it. But I would do a test-run first, just in case the fixatif reacts with something in the food coloring and/or bleach.
